Noddy is 60 this year and to celebrate Universal has released a new Noddy DVD for Christmas: Noddy’s Magical Christmas Adventures. Although we have never seen Noddy on the television, he has always been a favourite in our house as we have several Noddy books. So my daughter was delighted to see this latest Noddy DVD. The DVD consists of three Noddy episodes: Noddy and the Magical Moondust, Noddy Saves Christmas and Noddy: Catch a Falling Star.
The only episode which is a true Christmas one is Noddy Saves Christmas. We loved watching this. It starts with a great little Christmas song and some really lovely images of Toytown at Christmas. It really gets you in the mood for Christmas and is perfect for watching on Christmas Eve with your children.
The story is simple but ideal for young children. Noddy really wants to meet Father Christmas as he wants to ask him some questions: how does he manage to get round the world in one night, how does he get all the presents into one sack, and how does he get down chimneys and into houses? On Christmas Eve, Father Christmas asks Noddy and Big Ears to help him fix his broken clock. In return Father Christmas lets Noddy help him deliver his presents and answers all Noddy’s questions. The clever little magical tricks that Father Christmas shows Noddy are very sweet and are the perfect answer to all little children’s inquisitive questions about Santa! We really enjoyed watching this episode and have already watched it several times. I expect we’ll be watching it a lot more as Christmas approaches!
I was pleased to see that two of the episodes are not specifically Christmas based. Noddy and the Magical Moondust and Catch a Falling Star both have Christmas links as they are about magic and stars, but Christmas is not mentioned in either episode. I think this is good as it means that, although the DVD is a Christmas one, you could happily watch it at other times of the year too. Both of these episodes feature all the Noddy characters and are lovely stories to watch. My 18 month old daughter particularly liked Catch a Falling Star and laughed her head off each time we watched it!
I must confess that this isn’t a DVD that I would normally have thought of buying for my daughters. However I’m really pleased that we have seen it. It’s a lovely family DVD and perfect for pre-schoolers as the stories are all very gentle with no ’scary’ characters (as is often the case with Disney films).
The DVD has a RRP of £9.99, however it can be found for less than this online. Amazon and Play both sell Noddy’s Magical Christmas Adeventures for under £7, which I think is very good value for money. It’s a DVD which will be watched many times.
Verdict: 4/5
