This weeks budget saving tip is: Go eco-friendly use real nappies instead of disposables.
Before you say NO, check it out as a workable solution. There are so many real nappy options on the market at the moment that you are not short on options. We have highlighted a few over at our sister site Bambino Goodies including the following:
Real Nappies Round Up - This months hippest buys.
My Real Nappy Challenge.
On BBG we also highlighted the offer that Essex Council have with its sample real nappy pack.
The initial outlay is the expensive part but after that the long terms financial costs are cheaper as well as knowing that you are playing your part in helping the environment.
Laura at Fill Your Pants, a hot favourite with Bambino Goodies and a great resource for learning about real nappies as well as buying them, has provided us with some money save tips to make your real nappy experience even more cost effective.
Opt for the cheapest options, like terry squares or if you cant handle folding. Diddy Diapers are a great value shaped nappy.
These will save you between £600-700 compared with disposables (which accounts for laundry costs and any accessories
If you are using cloth nappies, it’s no extra work to use washable wipes also. This option will save you anywhere between £100-£200. Simply wet as needed, and bung in the nappy bucket to be washed with the nappies. Easy!
Use only 1/3 of the detergent you would usually use in your machine. This is recommended to prevent detergent build-up on the nappies, and will save you money too!
Washing nappies at 40 instead of 60 will save on energy bills.
Line-dry where possible- obviously weather permitting, but if it is raining, a clothes airer in front of the radiator works well.
If tumble drying, reduce the time needed by adding a dry towel in with the load.
Re-use the nappies for subsequent children, or if you arent having more, sell them on. A good place to sell used nappies is Used Nappies.
Take advantage of any local nappy incentive schemes. Visit your council website to see if they run any cashback shemes or similar. For example, Leicestershire County Council offer £30 cash back on any real nappy purchases, and also run a 2 week free nappy trial.
